Opening arguments will begin Tuesday in San Marcos in a capital murder trial 35 years in the making.

The body of Sheryl Ann Norris, a 20-year-old secretary at what is now Texas State University, was discovered Nov. 24, 1975, in the bathroom of her San Marcos apartment. She had been sexually assaulted, strangled and drowned.

For 35 years, police searched for her killer, finally catching a break in the case in 2010 when a DNA sample run through a federal database came up with a hit.

Willie Roy Jenkins, 59, was being held in the Coalinga State Hospital in Coalinga, Calif., under a civil commitment order. He was convicted of four rapes in California and Texas......

Elderly North Carolina woman beaten to death in her home

One of the many unsolved murders of white victims by black offenders.

 

  Magdalene Brantley Puckett, 68.

The victim was killed when four black males reportedly broke into her home in the middle of the night and beat her to death. 

The victim’s 81-year-old mother also was severely beaten during the incident, but survived.

 Four men in the middle of the night broke into Puckett's Clark Street home, where she lived with her mother.

The assailants beat Puckett to death. Before leaving the house, the killers also attacked Puckett's mother, who survived the assault.

Puckett died of severe head injuries, and her mother was hospitalized with facial injuries and a broken rib.
Police were unable to gather much information from Puckett's elderly mother because she was in shock after the attack.

She did say that four men attacked them and threatened to kill her when she tried to stop them from beating her daughter. Puckett's mother died a few years later.
